How do I design?

I begin with your needs. I like the challenge of creating something which serves its function well and pleases the eye. I disdain ornamentation for its own sake, and would rather finish a piece to enhance it’s grain than paint or cover it with plastic laminates.

If a particular look is desired, like Mission Style, Shaker or Art Deco, I’m happy to oblige. I can also adapt an existing design (something you’ve seen in a magazine or admired in a store) and build it to your specifications.

How do I work?

When you commission me, I provide detailed, scaled drawings and a formal, written estimate, including labor, materials, shipping and sales tax (if necessary). I begin work upon receipt of an agreed upon down payment (usually half) and normally deliver in 6-8 weeks depending on my current workload and your project’s complexity. The balance is due on delivery. (Should you decide not to proceed after I’ve prepared detailed drawings, I bill you a minimum fee (at least 25% of the total project estimate) to cover the labor of preparing the drawings, which of course are yours to keep.

The next step is yours.

If you’re in that "I’ve looked and can’t find it" mode, call or email me and we’ll talk about a custom piece for you. I have a portfolio (parts of which are illustrated on this website) and many samples of finished hardwoods. I have lots of ideas and love a challenge. It won’t be a waste of time. Besides how many charming, erudite, left-handed woodworkers do you know? It could be very enlightening.
